Tools like ChatGPT are changing the world as we know it, and college admissions are evolving with it. At first glance, AI seems capable of polishing even the weakest writing with the click of a button. But while ChatGPT might improve an essay’s surface-level quality, it cannot draw from the well of students’ experiences to craft a deeply personal narrative that rings with authenticity and originality. If anything, AI has flattened the college admissions landscape by injecting familiar language and tired structure into every essay, and its impact has only made it more difficult for students to rise above the noise and distinguish themselves.
In a sea of formulaic applications, my secret for standing out is surprisingly simple: I teach students to write from the heart, transforming moments in their lives into unique stories that leap off the page and showcase their talents, perspectives, and growth to admissions committees in the best possible light.
College Essays: The Personal Statement
When it comes to undergraduate applications, the personal statement (also known as the Common Application Essay) is by far the most daunting component for students. Crafting a story that conveys a student’s growth and ambition, brims with personality and insight, and makes an impression strong enough to warrant acceptance into a top university is a tall order. With the right coaching, however, what begins as a struggle can instead become a triumph. The personal statement presents applicants with a singular opportunity to showcase a side of themselves that admissions committees may not otherwise discern. Beyond every student’s GPA, test scores, and extracurricular activities is a unique and compelling story waiting to be told, and I’m here to help you uncover and tell that story.
But writing a memorable essay is only half the battle. For most students, the greatest challenge is knowing where to start. Through virtual one-on-one sessions, I guide applicants through every step of the writing process, from brainstorming exercises through drafts and revisions until they emerge with a sparkling, authentic personal essay. My work as a songwriter has endowed me with an ability to distill a narrative from even the most seemingly insignificant moments in a student’s life, while my BA from Northwestern University’s School of Communication guides my approach to strategizing how students can best market themselves to colleges in a way that shows (not tells!) what makes them special.
